Pranahita Chevella Lift Irrigation Scheme

Pranahita Chevella Lift Irrigation Scheme

The Pranahita Chevella Lift Irrigation diversion barrage across the Pranahita River is located at Thammidihatti village in the Komaram Bheem district of Telangana state. The project is a lift irrigation project to harness the water of Pranhita tributary of Godavari River for use in the Telangana state of India. It includes diversion canal from the Thammmidihatti barrage to connect to existing Yellampalli reservoir across the Godavari River. This scheme is confined to providing irrigation facility to nearly 2,00,000 acres in Adilabad district using 44 tmcft water.

Encardio-rite was awarded the sub-contract for supply as well as installation of safety monitoring instrumentation for the Barrage, tunnel and cavern. The project also required instrumentation and monitoring of the underground openings (cavern). A careful back-analysis of the data during initial stages of excavation was required to get valuable knowledge of the constants. The data was to be used further in the forward analysis to predict performance of the support system. As the size of the caverns was huge (excavated for surge pool and pump house), it was recommended to have geotechnical instrumentation for continuous monitoring of underground stability.

The instrumentation included:

  • Piezometer
  • Strain gauges
  • Load cells
  • Borehole extensometer – single point
  • Borehole extensometer – multipoint
  • Tape extensometer
  • Portable readout units and dataloggers
