Mawphlang Dam

Mawphlang Dam, a 52.5 m high concrete gravity dam on the Umiew River in Meghalaya, is part of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme. Encardio Rite supplied and installed safety monitoring instrumentation, including piezometers, uplift pressure meters, total pressure cells, strain meters, joint meters, and temperature meters. These instruments provide vital data for real-time monitoring of the dam’s structural health and safety, supporting effective maintenance and operation of this run-of-river hydropower and water supply project.

Mawphlang Dam

Mawphlang dam is a run-of-river scheme, located at Mawphlang village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya state in north-eastern India, 25 km from Shillong. The 52.5 m high and 135 m long concrete gravity dam is built over the Umiew River. It includes a headrace tunnel, surge shaft, pressure shaft, and a surface powerhouse. Mawphlang dam is part of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.

Encardio-rite was awarded the sub-contract for the supply as well as the installation of safety monitoring instrumentation for the project. The instrumentation included:

  • Piezometers
  • Uplift pressure meters 
  • Total pressure cells
  • Strain meters – rosette with no stress strain meter
  • Joint meters
  • Temperature meters
