The Al Rayyan Road upgrade project was undertaken to create a long term, sustainable road network, to reduce traffic congestion and minimize journey time. This project is part of Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
Encardio-rite was awarded the contract for providing complete monitoring solutions for the excavation work of Phase 2. Phase 2 of the project included upgrading a 5.5 km road from west of the Olympic roundabout to west of Khalid bin Abdullah Al Attiya roundabout. It consisted of an 8 lane expressway. In addition, 5.4 km of side and service roads were revamped.
The scope of work included supply, installation and monitoring of the geotechnical instruments. The instruments used consisted of inclinometers, load cells and piezometers. Monitoring reports including interpretations of variations observed in instrument data, mentioning the factors likely to affect their behavior e.g. construction, dewatering, third party activities etc. These reports were provided to the contractor on a regular basis.
The monitoring solutions provided, determined existing ground, structure and pore water pressure movements and trends prior to commencement of construction. Monitoring of parameters like lateral movements of wall, strut/anchor loads etc. provided knowledge of whether they were within allowable limits. If exceeded, the construction methodology required remedial changes. Monitoring also provided deflection and deformation data for the verification of initial design of permanent structures and temporary work supporting excavation.
