Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project

Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project

Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Tunnel Project, which will provide a sustainable solution for the discharge of surface and storm water.

The Project scope of work involves the design and construction of Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects which will provide a sustainable solution to discharge surface and stormwater. It includes the construction of a pumping station with 10 pumps and auxiliary facilities. The project also includes the construction of a 10 km tunnel offshore with a 3.7 m diameter. The project is designed to ensure the preservation of the marine environment, as the water, which will be pumped complies with the environmental assessment standards, and it is discharged 10 km off-shore to reduce the effect on the marine environment.

The newly constructed pumping station will be located at the end of Mesaimeer Tunnel south of Hamad International Airport. The pumping station will operate at a capacity of 19.7 cubic metres per second, its function is to pump water from Mesaimeer Tunnel, which was completed in 2016, to the new outfall tunnel.

Encardio-rite’s sister concern Encardio-rite Geosystems WLL in Qatar was awarded I&M sub-contract for the turnkey monitoring solutions that included:

  • Supply & Installations of geotechnical and geodetic instruments.
  • Monitoring of instruments
  • Daily, weekly & monthly reporting with interpretation
  • Dilapidation survey (Pre-Post construction Survey) of all nearby structures, utilities and Road/ Ground Surface.

Monitoring instruments were used to at shafts during excavations and open ground areas during civil construction and included:

  • Inclinometers were used around shafts to monitor lateral movements
  • Standpipe piezometers were used around excavation shafts to monitor groundwater level
  • Piezometers were used near shaft excavations to monitor groundwater pressure as build up of excess pressure on the excavation walls could lead to hydraulic instability
  • Pressure cells were used on shotcrete linings to assess the adequacy of lining shotcrete, to determine contact pressure on retaining and diaphragm walls
  • Bireflex and prism targets were used around shaft excavation to monitor 3D deformation/movements.
  • Surface settlements points were used on surface, curbs, pavements, structures, utilities to monitor ground settlement.
