Construction over soft soil
may cause settlement due to consolidation of soil under
the superimposed load. To avoid serious problems due to
such settlement, ground is made stable at the outset of
the project by either soil consolidation or other
methods of ground improvement.
Encardio-rite instruments
are often used for monitoring the progress of
consolidation/ground improvement and to determine
whether the foundation is stable. The parameters
monitored are vertical deformation and settlement of
subsurface, horizontal deformation, groundwater
pressure, etc. Instrumentation is also used to evaluate
the effectiveness of vertical drains used for
accelerating consolidation.
